Hickory, NC – July 24, 2025 – The Greater Hickory Cooperative Christian Ministry (GHCCM) is proud to announce the launch of its Homeless Veterans Assistance Program, a new initiative aimed at reducing homelessness among veterans in the Greater Hickory area. This program will provide comprehensive support to veterans experiencing or at risk of homelessness, including housing placement, case management, and access to critical resources.
“Veterans have served our country with courage and dedication,” said retired Navy Senior Chief – Kelly Gilbert, GHCCM Program Coordinator and Policy Developer. “It is our duty as a community to ensure they are not left behind—especially when they face homelessness and hardship. This program is about restoring dignity, stability, and independence to those who have sacrificed for us all.”
At the heart of the initiative is the newly established Homeless Veterans Services Coordinator (HVSC) position. This role is responsible for conducting outreach, coordinating care, and building partnerships with local veteran-serving agencies such as the Hickory Veterans Service Office, Foothills Vets 4 Vets, and Asheville VA HUD-VASH.
Key services will include:
- Rapid intake and needs assessments.
- Assistance with VA benefits, pensions, and healthcare access.
- Emergency shelter, food, and clothing support.
- Housing placement assistance through HUD-VASH and local providers.
- Peer support, vocational training, and rehabilitation referrals.
- Long-term follow-up to ensure lasting stability.
The program is rooted in collaboration. GHCCM will work closely with both local and regional partners to streamline services and advocate effectively for veterans’ needs. Formal partnerships with agencies such as Asheville Buncombe Community Christian Ministry will extend the continuum of care from emergency support to long-term recovery.
The initiative will be funded through GHCCM’s operational resources, targeted grants, and community donations. Catawba County residents and local businesses are invited to contribute to the mission by supporting GHCCM’s ongoing fundraising efforts for homeless veterans.
As the number of unhoused veterans remains a critical concern nationwide, GHCCM is committed to being part of the solution—right here in our own backyard.
